Portugal's flagship rail corridor — the fastest and most frequent connection between the country's two main cities. Around 37 departures a day in each direction, at speeds up to 220 km/h.

Two of central Portugal's most rewarding stops — Coimbra's historic university (UNESCO, 2013) and Aveiro's canals and Art Nouveau architecture — sit on the same Linha do Norte corridor, making them ideal cultural stopovers between Lisbon and Porto.

Among Europe's most scenic rail journeys — the Linha do Douro follows the river from Porto to the Spanish border through the UNESCO-classified wine landscape. Terraced vineyards, schist cliffs, and the river itself are visible from the train window the entire way.

• Key stops: Ermesinde, Penafiel, Marco de Canaveses, Régua, Pinhão, Pocinho

• Tip: Sit on the right side (south-bound) for the best river views. The seasonal Comboio Histórico do Douro (historic steam train) runs in summer — check CP for 2026 dates.

Direct intercity trains connect Lisbon to Faro, with onward regional connections to Lagos and Portimão. The route passes through the Alentejo plains before reaching the Algarve coast — a comfortable, scenic alternative to driving.

A beautiful coastal commuter line running from Lisbon's Cais do Sodré station to Cascais, hugging the Atlantic for much of the route. Frequent departures make it ideal for day trips or spontaneous beach excursions.

• Frequency: Every 15–20 minutes
• Stations: Cais do Sodré → Santos → Alcântara → Belém → Carcavelos → Estoril → Cascais
• Good for: Beach days, surf trips, half-day excursions from Lisbon
• Tip: Load a 24h Carris/Metro/CP ticket (€11.40) for unlimited travel on the Cascais and Sintra lines plus Lisbon metro and buses

The principal conventional rail link between Portugal and the rest of Europe — connecting through Vilar Formoso to Salamanca, Medina del Campo, and Valladolid. The line reopened in 2026 after major upgrades, with Intercidades services now running between Lisbon Santa Apolónia and Guarda.
